I am an economist. I work in finance in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I have lived for over two years.
There’s a joke about Argentina that God was distributing resources between the countries. As he gave Argentina gold, copper, coal deposits, minerals, oil, ice-free ports, arable land, and the list goes on, the other countries began to complain loudly. They said, “God – with all of this Argentina will surely become the most powerful country in the world! How will we compete?”
To which God replied, “Ah but in Argentina I will put the Argentines”
People refer to Buenos Aires as “the Paris of South America”
not quite.
Love your blog! I don’t see contact information for you but I would love to talk with you about you possibly being a guest speaker at an event for expats here in BA. Please send me an email if you’re interested!
Hi Robyn! Thanks for reading and reaching out. I’d love to get in touch and talk.
You can contact me at bianca.fernet@notparis.com to set something up 🙂
I wonder what would be your analysis, as an expert, of the “50% increase middle class in Argentina” http://siteresources.worldbank.org/LACEXT/Resources/English_Report_midclass.pdf . Maybe compare to real inflation rate, change ARS/USD. I don’t know… because technically the living for people I know in Argentina seems each year harder, so such an analysis looks strange to me..
Sincerely, and thanks a lot for sharing your economic analysis on your blog.

By the way, I left a very devils-advocate, tongue-in-cheeky reply to your last post but I do have to say that as an Argie expat, I do seek foreigners p.o.v. to get a little perspective of what’s going on down there (not too much, though, you know how you all guys are ‘agents of empire’ and such) and I had fun reading your sarcastic impressions of Buenos Aires… as someone originally from the outer rings (to use Star Wars phraseology) in the BA province. Keep it up.
